Burlington Comprehensive Plan 2032 Adopted!

The Burlington City Council adopted the Comprehensive Plan on Monday, November 19. The final adopted plan document is available for viewing and download from the Documents page. A 32-page summary version is also posted there, and you can view it online in a magazine-style format here.

Final Draft as Recommended by the Comp Plan Advisory Committee

The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee met for its final meeting on Thursday, September 20 to consider final edits based on public feedback and its own review.

The updated documents will be considered by the Planning and Zoning Commision on October 22. City Council will consider adoption in November following a final public hearing, date to be announced.

Implementation Chapter available for review

The Implementation Chapter (Chapter 6) of the Burlington Comprehensive Plan is now available on the Documents page. This chapter describes how the various goals, objectives, strategies, and actions of the plan will be pursued and addressed over time. The chapter also includes a compilation of all the actions identified in the plan, with designation of who should be working to complete them, and approximately when they should occur.

The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee will discuss this draft Chapter 6 at its next meeting, July 19 at 7:15 AM in City Council Chambers at City Hall. This meeting is open to the public.

Update to the Future Land Use Chapter

The Future Land Use chapter of the Burlington Comprehensive Plan has been updated, now including maps and design ideas addressing the Downtown/Waterfront area and the Roosevelt Avenue Corridor, based on input at the land use workshops in May 30. Also completed are a map of regional transportation and development projects and a City-wide Bike Routes and Trails map. See the Documents page.

Chamber Bucks Winners, Public Open House & New Content

Congratulations to Mike Klein, Abby West, and Rod Wittkamp who participated in the Citizen’s Survey and were drawn as winners of the Chamber Bucks prizes! Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey!

The upcoming public open house will offer another opportunity for anyone interested to contribute to the plan. This event will be held on May 30th from 6-8pm at the Burlington Public Library. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend. Participants will be discussing the future land use of Burlington with an emphasis on regional collaboration, Downtown and waterfront development, the Highway 61/Roosevelt Ave Corridor, and residential neighborhood growth.

In preparation for the open house, a draft of Chapter 5: Land Use has been posted on the Documents page. Two corresponding maps, Map 7: Future Land Use and Map 8: Planning Areas, are also posted.

New Plan Content Available

Now available on the Documents page is the second half of Chapter 4: Goals, Objectives and Strategies. This draft includes Agriculture & Natural Resources, Community Character, Hazards, and Collaboration & Partnerships. These draft sections will be reviewed and discussed by the Advisory Committee during a public meeting on Thursday, April 19th at 7:15am, City Council Chambers, City Hall. Attendance is welcome, as are comments posted on the Documents page.

Also posted on the Documents page are updated drafts of Chapter 4-Round 1 and Community Indicators.

Community Survey Complete, New Plan Content Available

Many thanks to the 1,000+ people who completed the Burlington Citizen Survey! The results are summarized in Chapter 2 of the draft plan, and complete results are provided in Appendix B. The most recent versions of both sections are available on the Documents page.

Also posted to the Documents page are two new sections. Chapter 3 – Issues and Opportunities is a preliminary compilation of the key concerns and ideas that have risen to the top through the planning process thus far. Chapter 4 – Goals, Objectives, & Policies is the first draft of the heart of the plan. It presents an initial set of policy statements and action ideas for four topics: Housing, Mobility and Transportation, Economic Prosperity, and Community Facilities and Services.

These draft materials will be reviewed and discussed by the Advisory Committee during a public meeting on Thursday, March 15, 7:15 AM, City Council Chambers, City Hall. Attendance is welcome, as are comments posted on the Documents page.

Draft Plan Sections Now Posted!

As portions of the Comprehensive Plan are completed and updated, we will be posting these drafts on the “Documents” page. Drafts will be posted a week prior to the Advisory Committee meeting at which they will be discussed. We appreciate your insights, so feel free to leave a comment on the website (make sure to indicate what document you are referencing!) or, if you like, attend an Advisory Committee meeting (third Thursday’s, 7:15 AM, City Council Chambers, City Hall).

Tell Your Friends! Burlington Citizen Survey to Remain Open Through February

In the past two weeks we have seen a great response to our request for viral marketing help. About 50 people are taking the survey each day, and as of today about 2.5% of residents have taken the Burlington citizen Survey. We’d like to see a 10% response rate, so we will be leaving the survey open until Monday, February 27th.

We still need your help!

If you haven’t already done so (or even if you have!), please send an email to your Burlington friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, etc. to encourage them to take the 10-minute on-line community survey. Ask them to forward the email to their networks too. Your encouragement is more effective than ours – please use your influence to get people involved in this important civic process.
